Abe and Mickie Mandel

Abe and Mickie Mandel performed, wrote, recorded and taught music together as a team since they were "flower Children" in the late 60's. In addition to adult guitar and keyboard classes they gave at Columbia Teachers College and Lehman, they are probably best-known for the popular 'Music-Mates" preschool program they created and taught for 15 years at The Lucy Moses School of the Kaufman Cultural Center on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

When first married, they performed in concerts, clubs, and on TV in the United States. For a few years they worked throughout Europe, Israel, Scandinavia, and Japan. Later they returned to New York, where they continued raising their family and teaching. They wrote their critically acclaimed guitar method book / CD set, Patterns for Amsco Publishing. Their first album, City Folk, was released by Stinson Records. More recently their new children's album, Music Mates, was released by Sheff Records.

The songs on this new CD, One Chorus, One Family cover a broad range of material. Here they use four of the 12 languages they often bring to music - and many different instruments - to create a synthesis of eclectic, intergenerational, ethnic, and popular music. Although Mickie occasionally plays keyboards or rhythm guitar, most of the six to 10 instruments you hear have been overdubbed by Abe. Much like the music program created for their work with The City Congregation, the songs on One Chorus, One Family attempt to reflect the range of backgrounds, ages, and experiences of Secular and Humanistic Jews everywhere.
