     One important aspect of any people's history is the lives and works of its outstanding figures in various fields - outstanding not in renown but in accomplishment, whether they were famous or obscure during their lifetimes. The major figures of Jewish history, from the biblical prophets to Maimonides, are well known. However, for secular and humanistic Jews, the lives of those who have inspired us - and even more so, the specifically humanistic aspects of their lifework - have been a half-buried heritage that has been only slowly unearthed.
